About El Retiro

Country luxury among forests and water, about 35 minutes from El Poblado via Las Palmas. Low-density estates, a traditional historic center and, according to La Lonja, the highest land appreciation in Antioquia in 2025.

El Retiro is the closest country-living municipality to Medellín via the Las Palmas road and one of the most sought-after residential destinations in Eastern Antioquia. Its territory, at around 2,175 m above sea level, blends forests, streams and the La Fe reservoir with gated estates, condominiums and weekend farms in rural districts (veredas) such as Pantanillo, Los Salados and Don Diego. In several rural sectors environmental rules cap density (around Fizebad, up to one home per hectare), which preserves large lots and landscape and explains why supply is concentrated in high-value country homes. According to La Lonja de Propiedad Raíz de Medellín y Antioquia, it posted the highest land appreciation in the department in 2025 (11.6%), and Galería Inmobiliaria recorded 359 new homes sold that year. Its town center keeps a traditional historic core, known for the year-end Fiestas de los Negritos.

Mobility and transport

The Las Palmas road links it to Envigado and El Poblado in about 35–50 minutes depending on traffic (≈33 km). Llanogrande, Rionegro and José María Córdova Airport are reached via Don Diego in about 25–35 minutes depending on the sector; La Ceja is about 20–25 minutes away. Frequent intercity buses run to Medellín (around one hour), but a private vehicle is essential in the estates. The town center is compact and easy to walk.

Safety

Favorable safety perception, supported by low density and access control in estates and condominiums, with gatehouses and private security. The town center has a police presence and a calm small-town feel. On isolated farms and lots it is worth assessing access, lighting and shared-security arrangements, as in any rural area.

Retail and services

The town center offers traditional commerce around the main square: supermarkets, bakeries, banks, pharmacies and restaurants. In the La Fe sector, on the Las Palmas road, Mall La Fe and the roundabout area concentrate a supermarket, services and a growing dining scene. For large stores and brands, the reference points are Llanogrande–Rionegro (Jardines de Llanogrande, San Nicolás) or El Poblado via Las Palmas.

Education and universities

On the El Retiro side of Loma del Escobero are the Liceo Francés de Medellín (vereda Carrizales) and Colegio San José de Las Vegas; in town, public schools such as I. E. Ignacio Botero Vallejo. EAFIT Llanogrande and Universidad Católica de Oriente in Rionegro are 25–35 minutes away, and the universities of El Poblado and Envigado can be reached via Las Palmas.

Healthcare

The town has a local hospital providing emergency care and outpatient consultations, and the municipality is planning a second- and third-level clinic. For higher-complexity care, Rionegro's network (Hospital San Vicente Fundación, Clínica Somer) is about 30 minutes away, and El Poblado and Envigado clinics are 35–50 minutes away via Las Palmas.
