About Marinilla

A heritage town 15 minutes from Rionegro and about 25 from the airport, on the Medellín–Bogotá highway. New stratum 3–4 apartments priced below the established Oriente towns, with a historic center declared a national monument.

Marinilla, known as 'la Esparta colombiana' for its role in Colombia's independence, is one of the new housing hotspots of Eastern Antioquia. Its town, at around 2,090 m above sea level, borders Rionegro and sits on the Medellín–Bogotá highway, making it a practical option for people who work in the Valle de San Nicolás or travel often. Supply is concentrated in new stratum 3–4 apartments in growth sectors such as Alcaravanes, La Dalia and Belén, with gated complexes, shared amenities and coworking spaces. According to Camacol Antioquia figures cited by El Colombiano, 426 new homes were sold in 2025 and nine large projects were on the market, with one clear advantage: prices more accessible than in the established towns. Its historic center, declared a national monument in 1963, and its tradition of guitar-making and Holy Week sacred music give it a distinct identity.

Mobility and transport

The Medellín–Bogotá highway links it to Medellín in about 45–60 minutes (≈47 km), to Rionegro in about 15 minutes and to José María Córdova Airport in 20–25 minutes. Frequent intercity transport runs to Medellín, Rionegro and the region, and the road to El Peñol leads to the Peñol–Guatapé reservoir. The town is compact and easy to walk; hillside sectors and rural areas call for a vehicle.

Safety

Medium-to-high safety perception for a growing town. Most new complexes have a gatehouse and security staff, and the center keeps steady commercial activity and police presence. As in any busy town center, the usual precautions apply at night.

Retail and services

Traditional commerce in the historic center and around the main square: shops, banks and restaurants. Chain supermarkets and discount stores cover everyday shopping. For malls and large stores, Rionegro is 15 minutes away (San Nicolás Mall and the Llanogrande offering).

Education and universities

Public schools such as I. E. Román Gómez, the Escuela Normal Superior Rafael María Giraldo and I. E. R. Técnico de Marinilla, plus private schools like Colegio UPB Marinilla. Universities are 15–30 minutes away in Rionegro (Universidad Católica de Oriente, EAFIT Llanogrande, SENA) and El Carmen de Viboral (Universidad de Antioquia).

Healthcare

E.S.E. Hospital San Juan de Dios de Marinilla for primary and emergency care. About 15–20 minutes away, Rionegro's network — Hospital San Juan de Dios de Rionegro, Clínica Somer and Hospital San Vicente Fundación — concentrates specialized care.
