About this neighborhood

Historic township of Rionegro declared Municipal Heritage in 1984, 35 minutes from Medellín via the Túnel de Oriente, nationally famous for its desserts, empanadas and colonial atmosphere.

Location and connectivity. San Antonio de Pereira is a township (corregimiento) of Rionegro in Eastern Antioquia, roughly 35 minutes from Medellín thanks to the Túnel de Oriente. It is part of the "Vuelta a Oriente" tourist circuit linking several highland municipalities. Main access is by paved road from Rionegro; intermunicipal bus routes are frequent.

Character and atmosphere. The old town preserves 18th and 19th-century colonial architecture: a cobbled main square, houses with packed-earth floors, wooden doors and railings, and the parish church dedicated to San Antonio built in 1722. The setting is calm and rural during the week; weekend tourist flow is high. Stratum 2-3 dominates inside the colonial core, while the San Bartolo sector and surrounding expansion areas show higher strata with gated complexes and country plots.

What to do and find. Gastronomy drives the place: empanadas, soursop merengón, natillas, fruit in syrup and traditional sweets. The Empanada Festival every August draws thousands of visitors. The main square and the colonial church are the heart of the township; the San Bartolo sector along the road to Rionegro offers more contemporary dining options.

Demographics. The resident population is mostly local, working in agriculture and tourism trade. The Eastern real-estate boom has brought families and professionals from Medellín seeking country plots or gated complexes within reach of the JMC airport and the Rionegro service corridor.

Real-estate trend. The area is in transition: low-density colonial fabric is giving way to apartment projects and gated residential complexes targeting quality-of-life buyers. Houses start around $590 million COP and new apartments from roughly $650 million in projects like Medieval Parque Residencial. Price per square meter in new construction is in the $4.5–$6 million COP range. Appreciation is driven by Túnel de Oriente connectivity and proximity to José María Córdova International Airport.
